Assam Govt Sanctions ₹30 Lakh Each for 25 New Manipuri Temples: Minister Kaushik Rai Announces at Nupi Lan Day

Lakhipuronline Digital Desk, December 13, 2025: In a landmark announcement aimed at preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Manipuri community in Assam, Minister of Barak Valley Development, Kaushik Rai, declared that the state government has finalized plans to construct 25 new Manipuri temples. Speaking at a significant cultural gathering in Silchar, the Minister revealed that a fund of ₹30 Lakh has been allocated for the construction of each temple, signaling a massive boost for cultural infrastructure in the region.

The announcement came during the observance of the 86th Nupi Lan Day, held at Gandhi Bhawan in Silchar. Organized by the All Assam Manipuri Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, the event commemorated the historic NUPI LAN "Women’s War" of Manipur, paying tribute to the brave women who fought against British colonial exploitation.

Honoring a Legacy of Resistance

The Nupi Lan Day is observed annually to honor the courage of Manipuri women who led two historic uprisings in 1904 and 1939 against the British administration and the exploitative "Lallup" (forced labor) system. Addressing the gathering, Minister Kaushik Rai emphasized that Nupi Lan was not merely a protest but a symbol of the extraordinary courage, self-sacrifice, and national pride inherent in Manipuri women.

"The struggle led by these women against economic exploitation and colonial oppression continues to inspire our society today," Minister Rai stated. "It is our duty to ensure that this history is preserved and that the community's cultural identity flourishes in Assam."

Infrastructure Push: Temples, Markets, and Conference Halls

Minister Rai provided specific details regarding the government's development roadmap for the community. He assured the gathering that the construction work for the 25 sanctioned temples would commence within the next 10 to 15 days. This initiative is seen as a major step in enriching the multicultural fabric of the state.

Beyond religious infrastructure, the Minister highlighted discussions regarding economic empowerment. The government is actively considering proposals to build a market exclusively for Manipuri women, modeled after the famous Ima Keithel (Mothers' Market) in Imphal. Additionally, plans for a modern Conference Hall to showcase Manipuri traditions and history are under government consideration.

Government Commitment to Inclusive Growth

Praising the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Rai reiterated that the current dispensation is committed to "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas." He noted that under the current leadership, every community in Assam is receiving equal dignity and opportunities.

"Our government prioritizes the holistic development of culture, education, sports, and social infrastructure. Strengthening the Manipuri Development Council is part of our strategy to empower the community further," Rai added.

A local elder attending the event expressed their gratitude, noting, "For years we have held onto our traditions with limited resources. This support from the government feels like a true validation of our identity in Barak Valley."
