According to administrative updates from Imphal, this strong cultural spirit was on full display this weekend. Local art organizations are currently putting a heavy focus on protecting regional heritage following recent periods of social unrest. By organizing public gatherings that celebrate literature and music, community leaders are working hard to shift the public focus toward peace, education, and shared history.
A Celebration of Literature and Music
On Sunday, September 20, a special cultural gathering took place at the Chanura Leikol (Children's Home) auditorium in Khurai Chairelthong, Imphal. The event was jointly organized by the Patriotic Writers Forum (PAWF) Manipur and the Jaideep Memorial Foundation. The main focus of the day was to honor the latest works of veteran writer and actress RK Nayansana Devi.
During the program, organizers officially released three major creative projects:
- Loktak Imana: A new collection of traditional songs and poetry written by RK Nayansana Devi.
- Sanarik Pareng: A book featuring 17 distinct short stories.
- English Translation of Sanarik Pareng: An English version of the short story collection, translated by Sanasam Umananda, aimed at reaching a wider global audience.
In addition to the printed books, a brand new Manipuri music video titled "Langban Thana Lakpada" was also launched. The video serves as a visual extension of the region's artistic expressions, blending traditional themes with modern media formats.
Focus on Preserving History
Reports emerging from the gathering highlight a strong message of cultural protection. RK Nayansana Devi, the author and producer behind the new releases, spoke openly about her goals. She explained that recent social challenges in the state pushed her to work even harder on her art.
"My main goal is to show the beautiful history and traditions of our community to the rest of the world. Instead of letting false stories spread, we must use our books, songs, and films to tell the truth about our peaceful culture and rich heritage."
Guest speakers at the event supported this vision. Dr. Nando Ningombam, a respected local scholar, gave a detailed talk on the poetry book "Loktak Imana." He pointed out how the book captures the everyday realities of the region. Thingbaijam Swarankumar, a well-known lyricist attending as a special guest, praised Nayansana Devi. He noted that she started her career as an award-winning theatre actress and continues to guide young artists today.
Challenges in the Local Film Industry
The event also opened up serious discussions about the business side of local art. N. Surjitkanta (widely known as BB Surjit), the former Vice Chairman-1 of the Film Forum Manipur, attended as the chief guest. While he congratulated the artists on their new releases, he issued a clear warning about the future of local filmmaking.
He explained that the people who fund these projects are facing major financial risks. According to Surjit, if movie producers stop investing their money, the entire local film industry will collapse. He urged the government and administrative bodies to create new policies that protect and support local film producers so they can keep the industry alive.
Honoring the Creative Team
To wrap up the gathering, the organizers took time to honor the cast and crew who brought the music video "Langban Thana Lakpada" to life. Recognizing the hard work of these individuals is a standard practice at such events, as it helps encourage the next generation of creators. From birth ceremonies to final rituals, songs and poetry are attached to every single part of community life.
The successful release of these books and the music video shows that local artists are not backing down. They are actively finding new ways to document their history and share their voice. As these new books hit the shelves and the video reaches screens, the focus now turns to how the younger generation will carry these cultural lessons forward.
