Cachar Native H. Imo Mani Singha Earns Ph.D. in Mathematics from Assam Royal Global University

H. Imo Mani Singha

Lakhipuronline Digital Desk, October 9, 2026:

The Barak Valley has long been known as a quiet engine for academic talent, regularly producing students and teachers who make their mark at higher levels of education. Adding to this proud record, H. Imo Mani Singha from Sribar in Cachar district has successfully earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Mathematics. The Assam Royal Global University awarded him this high honor for his detailed research into public health using numbers and formulas.

Currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at The Assam Royal Global University, his journey from a small village in Cachar to a top university classroom is a story of hard work and clear goals. It also highlights the strong base of education that exists in many families across the region.

Using Math to Solve Real-World Health Problems

When most people think of advanced mathematics, they imagine pages of confusing letters and numbers that seem disconnected from everyday life. However, Singha's research shows exactly how math helps society. His doctoral thesis is titled "A Study on the Dynamics of Smoking Trend of a Population using Fractional Order Mathematical Model."

In simple terms, he used advanced math to study how smoking habits spread among groups of people. By building these mathematical models, researchers can predict whether a bad health habit is going to grow or shrink over time. Health departments and governments use this kind of exact data to plan better public health rules and stop habits that harm communities.

"Mathematics is not just for the classroom. Applying mathematical models to behavioral trends, like smoking, gives health experts a clear map of how to tackle public health issues effectively."

He completed this deep dive into public health and numbers under the direct supervision of Prof. (Dr.) Anuradha Devi, who serves in the Department of Mathematics at The Assam Royal Global University.

A Journey Rooted in Barak Valley

Singha's educational roots are firmly planted in the Barak Valley. Before moving to Guwahati to teach and research, he spent his early higher education years in Silchar. He earned both his Master’s degree and his M.Phil. in Mathematics from Assam University, Silchar.

Assam University has served as the main training ground for thousands of students in the region, providing them with the tools they need to compete on a national level. Proving his academic skill, he also passed the highly difficult CSIR-UGC NET exam and earned a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Passing this exam is a major goal for science students across India, as it requires a very deep understanding of the subject.

Active in the Mathematical Community

Beyond his daily duties of teaching and researching, Singha remains very active in spreading the love of math to others. He has a strong record of sharing his work with the wider world:

  • He has published four different research papers in highly respected Scopus-indexed journals.
  • He has written and contributed to three separate book chapters on mathematics.
  • He frequently travels to attend national and international conferences to share ideas with other teachers and experts.

He is also heavily involved in the local and national math community. He holds Life Membership in both the Indian Mathematical Society (IMS) and the Assam Academy of Mathematics (AAM). Many students in Assam fear math, and organizations like the AAM work hard to make the subject fun and approachable for school children.

As part of this effort, he is closely linked with the Assam Mathematics Olympiad (AMO). For the past two years, 2025 and 2026, he took on the heavy responsibility of working as an Examination Centre Coordinator. By running these exams, he helps discover bright young math students and gives them a platform to shine.

A Family Built on Education

Behind every academic success story, there is usually a family that values reading and learning. This is especially true for Singha. He comes from a household where teaching was the family business. He is the son of Mr. H. Kamala Mani Singha, a retired headmaster, and Mrs. Kanchan Mala Singha, a retired headmistress.

Growing up in a home managed by two school heads in Sribar meant that discipline and a focus on textbooks were always a priority. Today, he shares this happy milestone with his older sisters, H. Tampha Mani Singha and H. Thaba Mani Singha. At home, he enjoys the support of his wife, Ksh. Manisha Singha, and his young son, Master Indraneel Heisnam.

Earning a Ph.D. takes years of quiet reading, failed tests, and long nights writing reports. As the news of his degree reaches his hometown, his family, friends, university colleagues, and former students are sending their warmest wishes. His success stands as a clear example for young students in Cachar that starting in a rural school can still lead to the highest academic honors.
