In a proud moment for Manipuri cinema, the thought-provoking short film "Thounagi Nongju" has clinched the prestigious Best Short Film Award in Category-A at the State Level Manipuri Short Film Contest 2025. Organized by the Democratic People's Front (DPF), Manipur, the competition celebrated cinematic excellence with "Thounagi Nongju" walking away with the top honor, which includes a cash prize of Rs. 1 Lakh, a shawl, and a memento.

A Grand Award Ceremony

The glittering award presentation ceremony was held on the afternoon of February 22 at the auditorium of Tanthapolis Cinema in Lamphel. The grand prize was ceremoniously handed over to the film's director, Rakesh Naorem, and producer, Dr. RK Nayansana Devi, by the Presidium Member of the event, former UNLF Chairman RK Meghen (Sanayaima).

The film's technical brilliance was also recognized on the big stage. Mohendro Kams bagged the Best Editor award, while Rakesh Naorem was honored with the Best Director award for Category-A. These individual accolades, each carrying a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, were presented by DPF President Dr. Narengbam Rajivkumar Singh and former Chairman of Film Forum Manipur, Samjetsabam Mangoljai.

A Powerful Message in Five Minutes

Clocking in at just five minutes, "Thounagi Nongju" delivers a hard-hitting societal message. The storyline boldly addresses the prevalent issue of electoral bribery, urging citizens to abandon the practice of taking money from candidates during elections. Instead, it serves as a wake-up call to the public to vote responsibly and elect good, capable representatives who will work for the betterment of society.

"This award is a testament to the fact that cinema can be a powerful catalyst for social change. We wanted to hold a mirror to society, and winning this recognition tells us that the message of electoral integrity has deeply resonated with the audience," remarked a representative from the production team.

The Cast and Crew Behind the Success

The film boasts stellar performances by lead actors Khwairakpam Nupathoiba and Ningombam Anita, supported by co-actors from the Yai School of Artiste, Brahmapur, Imphal. The compelling visual narrative was captured by cinematographer Sushil Yumlembam, with Tom Ningthiuja serving as the Assistant Director and Ta Khoimu as the Art Director.

Written by Dr. RK Nayansana Devi, "Thounagi Nongju" was produced under the banner of Ipak Films Production, Manipur, and presented by the Jaideep Memorial Foundation, Imphal.

Celebrating Cinematic Brilliance

Ipak Films Production expressed immense joy and gratitude towards the Democratic People's Front (DPF) for recognizing their effort and for organizing a competition that encourages filmmakers to create eye-opening, socially relevant content.

It is also worth noting that the contest featured a second tier, where "Isagi Mamal", directed by Hajarimayum Roji Devi, was crowned the Best Short Film in Category-B, similarly winning a cash prize of Rs. 1 Lakh, a shawl, and a memento. These events highlight a promising era for short filmmaking in Manipur, where art and social responsibility seamlessly intersect.
