Sit-In Protest Held at Manipur Bhavan, Shillong Against Atrocities on Meitei Community

Shillong, 15 September 2024: The Manipuri Elders' Consortium Shillong (MECS) organized a sit-in protest today at the historic Manipur Bhavan (Rajbari), Redlands, Boyce Road, Shillong. The protest was staged to condemn the ongoing violence and atrocities faced by the Meitei community in Manipur.

The site of the protest holds historical significance, as it was where Maharaj Bodhachandra, the then Maharaja of Manipur, signed the state's merger agreement. The protest drew participants from the Meitei community residing in Shillong, including students and members of the working-class community from Manipur.
Protesters voiced strong opposition to the recent aerial attacks on Meitei villages along the foothills of Manipur, which involved drones and rockets. These attacks have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, sparking widespread outrage among the community.
Alongside condemning the violence, demonstrators highlighted the growing issues of illegal immigration, narco-terrorism, and the spread of false propaganda targeting the Meitei people. The protest called for immediate measures to protect the indigenous communities of Manipur and stressed the urgent need for peace and resolution to the ongoing violence in the state.

The MECS emphasized the critical nature of these concerns, urging both state and central authorities to take swift action to restore peace in the region.
