Health mela organized at Lakhipur

SILCHAR, Feb 10: District Health Society and Lakhipur Block Primary Health Centre jointly organized a ‘health mela’ in Barak Garden LP School at Dilkhush tea estate in Lakhipur subdivision recently in order to create awareness about the gradual spread of diarrhea among the people mostly in tea belts and rural areas. It has been rumoured that it is due to the intake of drinking water supplied by the PHE department. A mobile medical team has been visiting those areas from where cases or complaints of diarrhea are being reported in the subdivision. This team has been on move since January 26.
The mela was also attended by PHE department officials who dispelled the general impression that the disease was caused by the water supplied from their plant. They held the view that the disease, in fact, was taking place due to the consumption of river water which was highly polluted. The daylong health mela was divided into several wings like examination of ENT, tuberculosis, diarrhea, malaria, eye etc. 600 patients got themselves admitted and treated, besides they were also given free medicines, medical advice on care and prevention of diseases.
People from Tilka Khasi Punji, Naraindahar Alni, Lakhipur tea estate, Fulertal, Binnakandie Ghat, Binnakandie tea estate and Sonbari attended the health mela. In the meantime, reports about the death of four persons from different areas of Lakhipur subdivision have jolted the health department. The medical team is led by Dr. Shekhar Suman Das, SDMO Lakhipur. Others who actively participated in the mela included K Jeena Leima Singh, B Bhattacharjee, Brajo Bhattacharjee, S Akhtar and Debojyoti Nath.
Dr. Shekhar Suman Das advised the participants in the mela to boil water either from PHE tap or river before consumption for their own safety. T T Daulagopu, ADC in-charge Lakhipur, visited the camp and expressed his satisfaction at the initiative taken. Rajdeep Goala, MLA, and Anil Goenka, manager and owner of Dilkhush tea estate, appreciated District Health Society and Lakhipur Block Primary Health Centre for their noble efforts in the interest of the common people.(Source: SentinelAssam)
