Barak Book Fair to begin from November 15

Silchar, November 9: The Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan (BUBSOSS) will conduct the annual book fair of 2015 in the three districts of Barak Valley. Publishers, distributors and booksellers from different parts of the country including Kolkata, Guwahati and Kumarghat among other places would take part in the fair. The fair will be held in all the 3 districts of Barak Valley. The book fair will begin in three phases. In the first phase, the book fair will be held in Silchar from November 15 to 21. In the second phase it will be held in Karimganj from November 23 to 27 and in the third phase it will be held in Hailakandi from November 29 to December 4.
It was informed by the members of BUBSOSS in a press-briefing held at Banga Bhawan here on Monday. Taimur Raja Choudhury, president of the Sammelan, said that the publishers’ and book sellers’ guild of Kolkata along with Tripura publishers’ guild have officially extended its support to the initiative. He further said that till date around 40 publishing houses have already registered their names to take part in the event. The committee expects around 55 to 60 houses to take part in the fair. The fair in Silchar will be held at Bipin Chandra Paul Sabhasthal.
Taimur Raja Choudhury further added to say that to encourage the youth to read books, a speech competition will be held in which students from all the schools and colleges of the valley can take part in. Tushar Kanti Nath and Sanjib Deb Laskar are organizing the event. The interested participants should bring a letter undersigned by the head of their respective institutions to participate in the competition. A maximum of 2 and 3 students each from schools and colleges respectively are eligible to take part in the event. All the participants will be given a gift coupon through which they can procure the books of their choice from any of the book stalls.
Gautam Prasad Dutta, general secretary, said that the process for registering in the event has been made by using the banking system. It is a fully transparent event. The fair will be inaugurated in Silchar by S Viswanathan, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, and Niharendra Narayan Thakur, SMB chairman, will be the chief-guest on the occasion. In Karimganj, the event will be inaugurated by eminent litterateur Janmajit Roy.
Gautam Prasad Dutta further said that the book fair is being organized without any assistance from the government. He expressed his gratefulness to the common public for their cooperation in this regard. The central committee also thanked Joy Bardhiya, senior functionary of District Sports Association, and Gobinda Kansha Banik, owner of Abahan book store, for taking initiative to make the event a success. Paritosh Dey said that the district administration has cooperated, as always, to make this event possible.
The members said that they are taking initiative to organize book fairs of similar kind in remote parts of the valley. The members expressed hope that the book fair of the valley will someday be as popular as the book fairs in other parts of the country. Other committee members who spoke on the occasion included Swapan Dasgupta, Biswanath Bhattacharjee, Ajoy Chakroborty, Nirendranath Biswas, Anil Paul and Bibhash Ranjan Choudhury.
