High Court directs Health Department to upgrade Lakhipur PHC

SILCHAR, June 20: In a landmark judgment given by the two member-bench of Gauhati High Court on May 27, directed the state health department to upgrade the Lakhipur PHC into a 200-bed civil hospital. The two judge bench consisted of acting chief justice K Sreedhar Rao and justice P K Saikia. It has directed the department to complete the project on a priority basis within a period of 6 months from the issue of the judgment. A copy of the order has already been delivered to the standing council of the health department of the state.
Lakhipur sub-division under the district of Cachar has a population of around 3 lakhs. For a long time, the people of the sub-division have been urging upon the administration for a civil hospital, as the area has only one PHC, which is insufficient to meet the demands of the residents for proper medical and health care.
On this issue, Prasanta Kumar Deb, president of Greater Lakhipur Action Forum (GLAF) along with 14 other residents had filed a PIL no. 33/2014 in the Gauhati High Court urging upon the administration to look into the matter. The people of Lakhipur along with the members of the Forum have expressed their gratefulness at the verdict given by the High Court. GLAF has also cautioned the state government that even after the verdict, if it fails to complete the project on time, they may launch a massive movement against the state administration.
