SILCHAR, September 18: Assam University will confer DLitt (Honoris Causa) degree on five times World Boxing champion and an Olympic medalist MC Mary Kom, Indian film actress Sharmila Tagore, Prof Brij Mohan and well–known litterateur Sukanta Choudhury at its XIVth Convocation to be held on November 15. Besides, the varsity will confer DSc on Dr Animesh Chakraborty, a professor in Chemistry, Prof Ashok Sahani, Prof PS Ramkrishnan and Prof V Rajaraman.
The Assam University authorities had already sent these names to the Ministry of Human Resource Development for its approval, an insider said. “The Vice–Chancellor of Assam University Prof Somnath Dasgupta sent a letter in this regard to the Ministry of Human Resource Development on August 6, seeking the ministry’s approval on conferring the DLitt and DSc on these personalities,” said an insider.
MC Mary Com will be the cynosure of all eyes if she attends the Convocation. Although she hails from the neighbouring State of Manipur, but she had never visited the southernmost river valley and thus it is going to be here maiden visit to Barak Valley.
Born on March 1, 1983, Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom had overcome many odds and oddities in her way to reach at the zenith of success. She has fans across the country including Barak Valley.
“Wow. It’s great! Mary Com, my ideal, is coming to my university. I am going to take my degree with Mary Kom. It is going to be a dream come true. She has been an exceptionally good boxer as well as an inspirational figure. She has faced lots of hurdles in her life, but she never gave up which made her a superwoman,” said Sangita Bhattacharjee, a student of Assam University.
Abhishek Chakraborty, a former student of Assam University who will attend this Convocation to get his master degree, said that he was a big fan of Mary Com. He added to say, “I read her autobiography Unbreakable which was co–authored by Dina Serto and released last year. I also saw the recent biographical film about her life which was directed by Omung Kumar. She is an inspirational personality.”
