Pillion riding prohibited in Cachar

SILCHAR, July 27: Gokul Mohan Hazarika, Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of
Cachar, issued an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting pillion riding in the district of Cachar
with immediate effect and which shall remain valid until further order. This has been done in
view of the recent incidents of grenade blasts in Lakhimpur and Karbi Anlong districts caused by
extremists riding on motorcycles. The order says no person shall carry any person on the
pillions of two wheelers of any make or model. Exceptions have however been allowed in
respect of personnel of armed forces,  paramilitary and police personnel on duty using
the two wheelers. Women and children below 12 years are also exempted from pillion riding
prohibition. Apprehension has been expressed that the incidents of grenade blasts may be
resorted to anti social elements and extremists in the district in view of the ensuing
Independence Day Celebrations, 2013. There are sufficient grounds to clamp the prohibitory
order for prevention of unlawful activities and to maintain peace and tranquillity. (Sentinelassam)
