Manipuri Literary Society mourns death of litterateur

SILCHAR, Dec 30: The Manipuri Literary Society of Silchar at a condolence meeting here on Thursday mourned the sad demiseof the National Sahitya Akademy Awardee poet, playwright and critic, Biren Singh of Manipur who expired recently after a prolonged illness at his residence. He was 69. He received the highest award in literature for his work 'Mapan Naidabasida Ei (I at the edgeless point)' written in 1990. Biren Singh has to his credit five books of poetry, two of short story and one of short play. Some of his poems have been included in the curriculum of colleges and universities.
The condolence meeting presided over by K Babu Singha was addressed among others by Dr Th Paolen Singha, Dr Bidya Sagar Singha, N Dhiren Singha, M BhubanSingha and A Manglemba Singha. All of them described his death as a great loss to Manipuri literature and the void created would be difficult to fill. A minute's silence was observed as a mark of respectto his departed soul and prayer to God for its eternal peace. Sympathy was extended to the members of the family in their hour of bereavement.
