SILCHAR, Nov 28: Around 8 pm on Sunday, a vehicle at speed dashed the motorcycle from behind at Shibpur on NH-53, 30 km from here, under Lakhipur police station of Cachar. Under its impact,Y Ranjan Singh (37) who was driving the bike was seriously injured and the pillion rider Biju Singh (26) sustained minor injury after both of them were thrown off the motorcycle. Both are the residents of Sribar. As it was dark, the vehicle, most probably a Tata Sumo or a Cruiser, could not be identified by the drivers or the passengers of the passing vehicles. Local people came to the rescue of bike riders. Y Ranjan Singh was taken to a local hospital, but as his condition was critical, he was shifted to Valley Nursing Home here.
Irate and agitated people of the area blocked NH-53 at Shibpur point, the site of accident, for six hours from 6 am today, demanding administrative action to restrict the speed limit and prevent overcrowding of passenger vehicles. SDO (Civil) Leena Das, SDPO KK Barua along with OC of Lakhipur police station, Biswajit Purkayastha, reached the spot and pleaded with the agitated people to lift the blockade, considering the inconveniences and difficulties of public and commuters, besides that of the school and college going students. After getting assurance from the civil authorities of proper action to control the traffic and prevent overcrowding of passenger vehicles, the blockade was lifted.
