Demand for state holiday to honour Bir Tikendrajit

SILCHAR, Aug 11: Various Manipuri bodies in a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam sent through the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar today have demanded declaration of August13 as state holiday on account of the Martyrdom Day of the national hero Yuvaraj Bir Tikendrajit. It has been pointed out that it was on this day that Bir Tikendrajit of Manipur was hanged to death by the colonial British rulers in 1891. Since then, the Manipuris all over the country commemorate as Martyrs Day.
These bodies urges upon the State Government to respect the sentimentsand emotions of people and take a positive decision to declare August 13 a state holiday which will be a matter of pride and glory for the Manipuris. In Barak Valley, the day is declared a restricted holiday. It is believed that the Chief Minister taking into consideration the significance of the day will take a proper decision. (SentinelAssam)
