Marathon for peace evokes wide response

SILCHAR, Dec 27: Marathon race for peace organized by Lions Club of Lakhipur evinced keen response and wide appreciation amongst the people, a mixed population of various ethnic groups, tribals and non tribals. Considered as a very sensitive zone for its proximity to Manipur and North Cachar Hills, the initiative by Lions Club assumes significance for strengthening the bond of amity and friendship and to build up an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
In all 120 youths took part in the competitive race today covering a distance of 10 km with the time limit of 85 minutes to complete. From the starting point of Pailapool Nehru Higher Secondary School to its termination on the same venue, large number of people turned out all along the route to cheer up the runners. At the end of the strenuous and nerve-cracking run, it was Paras Karmakar of Labac tea belt who bagged the first spot, winning a cash price of Rs 5,000, followed by Sabim Ahmed Barbhuiya and Shanta Singh who were second and third, taking Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively in their kitty. The lone female participant Papia Das was inspired by conferring on her certificate of appreciation.
The marathon was flagged off by Dinesh Prasad Goala, Minister of Urban Development and Housing, in the presence of distinguished assembly of Banasree Nath, SDO (Civil), KK Barua, SDPO, RK Sharma, Assistant Commandant 107 CRPF and the members of Lions Club, Lakhipur. Satrughan Thakur, president, director Nanda Singh and Pradip Dey, programme coordinator and Raju Chowdhury, president of Silchar Lions Club in their addresses expressed satisfaction at the successful conclusion of the race with the active coordination and cooperation of people in general.
