BJP-AGP alliance suffers major jolt in Silchar

ILCHAR, July 12: The much publicized AGP-BJP alliance till 2011 Assembly election received a jolt here in Silchar, on seat sharing for the forthcoming Municipality election as the AGP demanded at least eight seats to its senior partner BJP, but the latter agreed to leave only one.

The list of candidates as announced by the BJP yesterday showed that only Ward No. 8 was left to the AGP.

This had obviously angered the AGP leadership as district president Naba Gopal Das termed this an act of treachery and announced that their candidates would contest the poll as independents. He said it was indeed very humiliating for them that BJP did not even show the courtesy to discuss with us before finalizing the list. Meanwhile, BJP’s organizing secretary in charge of the entire Barak Valley Nitya Bhushan Dey argued that since the Silchar AGP had no experience of contesting civic body poll, they did not feel it necessary to discuss the matter with the latter about the seat sharing.

However, BJP district president Uday Shankar Goswami said that discussion was on with the AGP regarding the matter. Dey, meanwhile, claimed that their many aim was to form the board and hence win ability of candidates was the prime criterion.

As the AGP had no solid base in Silchar, it was natural that BJP would field its own candidates.

AGP should understand this point, Dey concluded. Meanwhile, BJP finalized its candidate for Ward No. 3 as Rosy Chakraborty. They had announced the names of candidates for ward 26 and 27 earlier. (Source - The Sentinel)
