Assam Film Fest from July 17

JORHAT, July 9 – The Assam Film Festival 2009 will be held from July 17, with a three-day long programme at Jorhat. The programme will be held under the joint auspices of Asam Chalachitra Samaj, Guwahati Cine club and Lakhmi Union Bengali Club, Jorhat .

The festival will begin with the show of the popular Chinese film Samsara directed by Tan Nalin on July 17. A host of luminaries, prominent film makers, directors and other film artists from across the country are expected to take part in the inaugural function. Two documentaries entitled Gana Silpi Maghai Oja based on the life and achievements of Maghai Oja, the crafty player of dhol and A Spirit of an unknown Assamese based on the life of Sankardeva awardee, Sonaram Chutia will also be screened in the evening .

On July 18, the programme will begin with the Assamese film Aideu, which received the Rajat kamal Award. Then two other films Sakha Prasakha directed by Satyajit Ray and Wild Strawberries directed by Ingmer Berman will be screened. A popular Sri Lankan film is also going to be presented on the same day.

Adajya directed by Dr. Santana Bordoloi, an Assamese film will pave the way for the others like the Bengali film Nagarik directed by Ritwik Ghatak and Iranian film Children of Heaven directed by Majid Majidi on the third day of the programme. Bharati Devi a Beautiful Heart directed by Sarmila Maitee and Mahiruha directed by Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta are the two attractions of the day. A multi lingual souvenir edited by Pranjal Bora will also be released in the same programme.

The renowned invitees to the festival are Sri Lankan Film director Satumal Lianaresi , Sarmila Maitee from Kolkata , Kanak Kalita and Humayun Choudhary of Guwahati Cine Club , Arup Manna , Sanjiv Sabhapandit , Santana Bardoloi and renowned film critic Monuj Borpujari .
