Flood situation of Lakhipur Sub-division
Lakhipur (Cachar, Assam), September 09, 2007 : The flood situation in Lakhipur Sub-division of Cachar (Assam) was grim today, with waters inundating vast areas of human habitation and crops following incessant rains that lashed the state for the past week.Official reports said the Barak River and almost all its tributaries were flowing above the danger level, forcing people living in low-lying areas of Lakhipur Sub-division, viz.
Ever rising Barak river adding flood woes to Lakhipur sub-DivRupaibari Pargana, Kaptanpur Part III - XII, Dewan Devipur, Dewan Basti, Sibpur Part III, Chiripar Part I & II, Lalang Part II - III to move to higher ground.Rupaibari Pargana is now submerged under water.The Silchar Jiribam National Highway No.53 at Rongpur is also under water.Here, all the vehicles stopped plying from today evening.Today at 5 PM according to Central Water Commission sources the water level of Barak River at Lakhipur was 25.60m, here danger mark is 23.88m.Above 65 villages in the Lakhipur Sub-division were underwater, and 45,000 people were moving to relief camps.Control room is open at Lakhipur with telephone no (03842) 287525. According to Official reports out of total land area 2,72,144 Bighas of Lakhipur Subdivision 63,890 was submerged by water.In the Barak Valley, the Katakhal and the Kushiyara are also flowing above the danger level and maintaining a rising trend.The current wave of floods has affected nearly 6500 villages in the Brahmaputra valley and more than 2.6 lakh people in the Barak valley.In Barak Valley it receives 70.9mm of rainfall said the RMC sources.
