Govt prohibits strikes in oil, gas sectors


GUWAHATI, Aug 17 - The government has prohibited strikes by officers, workmen and others in the oil and gas sectors in the State for a period of six months under the Essential Services Maintenance (Assam) Act, 1980.
The oil and gas sectors include any service in any oilfield or refinery dealing with production, supply or distribution of petroleum and petroleum products including natural gas, stated an official press release here today.
Meanwhile, the Mrityunjoy 108 Emergency Services have also been declared as essential service under the Essential Services Maintenance (Assam) Act, 1980.
Any person who commences a strike which is illegal under this Act, or goes or remains in, or otherwise takes part in any such strike will be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to six months, or with fine which may extend up to Rs 1,000, or with both.
The Government of Assam, through a notification dated August 16, 2016, has also declared the emergency response services running under ‘102-IFT Service’ as essential services under the Essential Services Maintenance (Assam) Act, 1980.
The Act prohibits strike by any person involved in running the 102-IFT Services. The order will remain in force for a period of six months from the date of issue of the notification, added an official press release issued here today. (Source: AssamTribune)
