'Football tournament begins in Lakhipur subdivision'

SILCHAR, Jan 24: In a bid to promote football in rural parts of Lakhipur subdivision, Manipuri Development Council in association with United Manipuri Association, Assam (UMAA), is organizing football tournaments each year. The inaugural football match of 2016 tournament in memory of Freedom Fighter S Gour Singh was organized in the playground of Singerbond High School recently. The match was played between Lakhipur North and Sribar Division teams. Interestingly, the hard fought match was drawn as both the teams scored two goals each.
An inaugural function was also held on the occasion which was presided over by Ng. Niranjan Singh, president of United Manipuri Association, Assam (UMAA). L Atol Singha, senior citizen, and Sabitri Devi, vice-chairperson of Manipuri Development Council, Assam, were the chief-guest and guest of honour respectively of the programme. Others present on the occasion included Krishna Bahadur Chetri, veteran footballer, MDC members, Jamir Ahmed Choudhury and K Singh, and DSA officials Sithil Dhar and Chandan Sarmah.
A total of 12 teams are participating in the football tournament. The matches will be played in four different venues including Lakhipur, Singerbond, Banskandi and Jirighat. The final of the tournament is scheduled to be held on February 24 at Eagle Hospital playground of the subdivision. It was informed by P Singh, organizing secretary of Freedom Fighter S Gour Singh Memorial Invitition Football Tournament.
