No place for those coming after 1971

GUWAHATI, May 18: In the ongoing update of the 1951 National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam, the names of ‘genuine’ Indian citizens, who came to the State for a living after March 25, 1971, will not be included in the NRC. This has been informed to the State government by the Registrar General of India (RGI).
The State government, however, has made it clear that the names of these Indian citizens in the State will be there in the electoral rolls.
Sources said the RGI has taken the decision not to include the names of these Indian citizens in the NRC for the State on the basis of the Assam Accord which sets March 25, 1971 as cut off year.
The State government further stated that names of those Assamese people who were in erstwhile Shillong will be included in the NRC but they will have to furnish documentary evidence which proves their stay in the then capital of undivided Assam and their connections to home State. Sources further said the RGI will soon provide a list of documents needed for this purpose. The 1951 NRC update process in the State is now heading into its crucial phase with the house to house distribution of NRC forms.
After the distribution of NRC forms, people will have to fill the forms with legacy data code numbers which have been made available by the NRC Sewa Kendras and the NRC website. If a person hasn’t found his or her legacy data code yet but he or she has been living in Assam since 1971 or before, the person must fill the NRC form with alternative prescribed documents. The filled-in NRC forms should be submitted at the Sewa Kendras within July, a top government official said.
It may be mentioned that 2,500 NRC Sewa Kendras have been set up all over the State.
The 1951 NRC is based on the 1951 census containing names of 64 lakh citizens. The decision to update the 1951 NRC was taken at a tripartite meeting held between the Central government, the Assam government and the AASU on May 5, 2005 in New Delhi. The present NRC update exercise is being held in the State under the supervision of the Supreme Court. (Source: SentinelAssam)
