Silchar, March 23: The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected BJP led Silchar Municipal Board will be held on April 2 at Banga Bhawan. The well-known legal practitioner and the ward commissioner of ward number 25 Niharendra Narayan Thakur will become the new chairperson of the board.
The Silchar town BJP president Deepayan Chakraborty in a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar made an appeal to him to send invitation to the MLAs, MP, members of different political parties, leading citizens and employees of Silchar Municipal Board to be present at the oath taking ceremony which is slated to begin at 11 am.
In the recently held municipal polls, BJP backed candidates won 17 seats out of 27 wards. BJP candidates won in ward numbers 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18, 19, 21, 25, 26 and 28, while Congress tasted the victory in 17, 3, 9, 22, 27, 13, 20 and 5. The Independent candidates won in ward numbers 8, 16 and 23. With that victory, BJP had stopped the Congress to form the board for the third time consecutively.

Turncoat and the former Vice Chairman of Silchar Municipal Board Bijayendra Prasad Singh, who defeated Congress candidate Sanjeev Roy by 1422 votes from ward number 4, is one of the strongest contenders for the post of Thakur’s deputy. Apart from Bijayendra, two times BJP ward commissioner Bhagya Rani Paul’s name is also doing the round. The BJP ward commissioner from ward number 28 and the general secretary of BJP town committee Abhrojeet Chakraborty and former Vice-President of 1997 BJP run board Mitra Roy are also in the race. In its manifesto, BJP had promised introduction of a night ambulance service at a concessional rate, construction of a modern guest house in the town, streetlights with LED bulbs, a playground in the New Silchar locality of the town, an auditorium, at least two parks in the area, a modern art gallery in the town, online facilities for all works of the municipal board, besides it would lower the present betterment fee from Rs 100 to Rs 50.
