Residents demand probe into fund utilization

SILCHAR, June 26: The residents of Lakhipur municipal areas have questioned the utilization of State government funded schemes in all the 10 wards of Lakhipur Municipal Board. In a statement before the media, Bappa Sen, secretary Anti Corruption Organization of the sub–divisional town of Cachar, has pointed out that in order to ascertain proper utilization of funds in different wards, an 11 member team of Anti Corruption Organization make an on the spot survey and study of the issue raised in public forum and voiced from time to time through the media. Though after verification, the team found some works in all the wards excepting ward No. 6 of Fulertal.
The allegation, according to the team, is that the quality of work in the ward under scanner has been very low, compared to that of remaining wards. In particular, the sanctioned work of saw mill ghat project has not been completed. No plausible explanation could be given for the incomplete work. The team was surprised to find that though a huge fund was allotted for the project, only a few concrete steps have been built. People have begun to doubt that by constructing steps of a few metres along the ghat, the entire fund has been shown as utilized. No signboard detailing the amount of money sanctioned as well as other technical details has been put up.
It has been further alleged that after constructing the drainage system along the saw mill ghat for a few metres, it has been linked with old drainage with some improvement and the contractor entrusted with the work, it has been suspected, has conspired to siphon off the sanctioned fund against it. Against the backdrop of mounting public criticism against the work in ward No. 6, Anti Corruption Organization has demanded thorough investigation into all the schemes and submitted a memorandum in this regard to the Chairman of the Municipal Board.
A copy of the memorandum has also been sent to the Commissioner and Secretary, Urban Development Department, Dispur, the Deputy Director of Urban Department, Guwahati, The Deputy Commissioner of Cachar and Director, Municipal Administration of the State. It has also been demanded that the licence of the contractor concerned should be cancelled. The Lakhipur Anti Corruption Organization secretary claims to have got positive response from the higher authorities concerned for investigation and proper action. (Source: SentinelAssam)
