SILCHAR, April 30: Lakhipur Police today averted a major blast by nabbing the persons carrying a bomb along with 20 pieces of detonators, 35 pieces of gelatin wire weighing 5.5 kg from a bus.
After receiving information from reliable sources, the Sub Divisional Police Officer Anjan Pundit and Officer In–charge of Lakhipur police station along with Police personnel put a check gate at Shibpur turning under Lakhipur constituency. When the Police searched a Harinagar bound bus coming from Silchar, 20 pieces of detonators, 35 pieces of gelatin wire along with a bomb weighing around 3 kg were recovered from the procession of one Thana Kuki (35), son of Sai Kocha Kuki, a resident of Faijol Kukipunjee under Jirighat police station and his wife Mary Kuki (27). The bus (AS 11 B 9782) named Baba Moni Deluxe was also seized by the Lakhipur Police. In order to defuse the bomb, Lakhipur SDPO informed 27 Assam Rifles. A team of Assam Rifles personnel under the leadership of Major JS Malik rushed to the spot and deactivated the bomb.
Lakhipur Police immediately arrested Thana Kuki and Mary Kuki along with the driver of the bus Anup Adhikari (35), son of Late Sachindra Ahikari, a resident of Kanakpur part III under Jaipur police station and the handyman Dilwar Hussain Mazumder (25), son of Saiful Mazumder, a resident of Kanakpur part III.
On being interrogated, a map of Barak Bridge and Chiri Bridge in Lakhipur area was recovered from the possession of Thana Kuki. The Police suspects that they were in a plan to blast the bomb at both the bridges. Earlier, an attempt was made by the anti–social elements to blast a bomb at Chiri Bridge last year.
