Ten illegal liquor traders booked in Lakhipur

SILCHAR, November 13: The State Excise Department carried out a raid at the dens of illicit liquors, country made and foreign, at Binnakandi area and Silghat Nagapunji near Banskandi on Monday under the guidance of Sunamoni Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Excise. According to the information, suspected tea stalls and pan shops which are known to be the hot points for sale of liquors and other forms of intoxicants were raided in which 10 persons involved in unauthorized manufacture and sale of liquors were taken into custody and cases registered against them. The drive was carried out at the order of the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil), Nabarun Bhattacharya. The team which consisted of 19 members located and destroyed many hide–outs along with the materials used for making liquor clandestinely and illegally. Ruth Lingthang, Circle Officer and Magistrate, Lakhipur sub–division had also accompanied the team. Public complaints against the sale of liquor and other kinds of intoxicants across the sub–division have not been new. The Lakhipur sub–divisional administration had carried out similar raids and smashed many such dens, unauthorized structures as well as selling points last month before Durga Puja in which as many as 139 illegal liquor peddlers were booked. The raids were a part of the month long ‘Clean drive’ operation that was launched by a team of the State Excise Department assisted by police and CRPF headed by the Excise Inspector, Kishore Kanti Purkayastha to sanitize the entire sub–division and to make the festive days of Durga Puja incident free.
