139 illicit liquor peddlers booked

SILCHAR, October 12: The drive against illicit liquor, local and foreign, across the Lakhipur sub–division of Cachar, resulted in smashing a large number of dens of the peddlers. The month long operation was carried out at the order of the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil), Nabarun Bhattacharya. Starting from September 11, the ‘Clean drive’ operation was launched by a team of the State Excise Department assisted by police and CRPF headed by the Excise Inspector, Kishore Kanti Purkayastha, was to sanitize the entire sub–division and to make the festive days of Durga Puja incident free.
According to information, the operations were carried out in phases in both the urban and rural areas of the sub–division. The areas covered were under the police stations of Lakhipur, Joypur, Banskandi and Jirighat. Apart from seizure of huge quantity of liquor from tea stalls, pan shops and other hide outs, dens manufacturing local liquor located in isolated places were raided. In this operation, village defence party also played a significant role. In all, 139 illegal liquor points were raided and cases were registered against the persons dealing with them.
In the first phase of drive, 90 illegal points were raided and in the second phase of operation, 49 illicit manufacturing and selling points were brought under it. So far, Durga Puja celebration in the sensitive sub–division located close to the border of Manipur and Dima Hasao district has been peaceful. It is to be put on record that the operation was carried out on the insistence of people in general as the menace of illicit liquor has been assuming alarming proportions in the sub–division.
