SDO starts investigation into Kalabil witch–hunting

SILCHAR, June 17: NabarunBhattacharjee, SDO (Civil) of Lakhipur sub division, started recording the statements of witnesses of the gruesome witch–hunting case of Kalabil, near Narainpur tea garden, under Banskandi police station, 20 km fromhere. The hearing started in his office chamber at Lakhipur. According to information from the sub divisional headquarters, the investigation was taken up on the order of the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Gokul Mohan Hazarika.
In fact, even before the DC ordered for thorough probe into the ghastly incident which took away the life of 55 year old Jahar Lal Mura, the SDO in coordination with the investigation officer of Banskandi police station, Abdul Bashit, had recorded the tatements ofa number of witnesses. Apart from the 11 accusedwho included 3 women, the police arrested 6 morepersons of the same village of Kalabil who formed the deadly frenzied mob which mercilessly beaten up andbattered Jahar Lal Mura todeath and later on all the villagers joined together to bury him near the village. It was a bizarre and blood–curdling murder and burial which shook the entire civilized society and raised many questions about the motive behind the killing as reported in the media.
The villagers in unison targeted him as 'an evil force' for whom nothing good could be done or achieved for the village. This became a sort of firmbelief in the minds of villagers. Some of them claimed that their hidden deity had appeared in their dream and asked them to kill Jahar Lal and offer him as sacrifice before her whom they worshipped as 'Sarva Mangala Kali' who in turn would bless the village and its people with peaceand prosperity and fulfill their wishes. It was this driving force that led the villagers to kill Jahar Lal on June 6 last around mid noon. With the help of strong combined force of police and CRPF, the body was exhumed and sent for postmortem to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. The investigation so far conducted brought out the most cruel fact that it was deep and dark blind faith in some hidden deity that motivated all the 80 families of Kalabil to target Jahar Lal Mura and free the village from the evil spirit. The investigation officer, Nabarun Bhattacharjee, said the recording of the statements of two more persons would complete the inquiry. The two other persons to be examined are bagan panchayat of Narainpur and gaon panchayat president of the area. (source:sentinelassam)
