Nine–year–old girl gangraped in Cachar

GUWAHATI/NEW DELHI, April 22: A nine–year–old girl was allegedly gangraped by two unidentified persons in Cachar district on Monday. The victim who lives in Karimganj had gone to pay a visit to her grandfather in Pechachora village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kallain police station of Katigora sub–division when two unidentified persons with covered faces abducted her.
The girl was then taken to a house at the Kallain Tea estate and gangraped before being abandoned.
Tea garden labourers found the girl and took her to a local hospital. She was later shifted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
Injury marks have been found on her neck and police suspect that the rapists had attempted to kill her after raping her.
A massive search operation has been launched for nabbing the culprits.
Meanwhile, AGP MPs Kumar Dipak Das and Birendra Prasad Baishya raised the Cachar girl rape issue in the Rajya Sabha. They said that such cases of rape taking place in Assam and somewhere else, excluding Delhi, don't get the Central government's attention, which is really unfortunate. They also urged the Central government to take steps to arrest the culprits.
On this issue, Rajya Sabha Deputy Speaker PJ Kurien told the Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to conduct a probe into the rape of the girl in Cachar district and to submit the enquiry report to the Rajya Sabha. (Source: SentinelAssam)
