Manipuri Alliance for election to Manipuri Development Council

Silchar,March 19: A pressure group of Manipuri community formed jointly by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, All Assam Manipuri Students' Union, All Assam Manipuri Women Meirapaibi Coordination Committee, All Assam Manipuri Youth Association, Senior Citizens' Forum, Barak Valley Meitei Convention, Thangal Marup and Manipuri Diaspora has demanded election to the Manipuri Development Council now running on ad–hoc basis by the State government of Assam. A meeting of the Pressure Alliance on Monday after threadbare discussion opined that the interim MDC has no legal right to continue and referred to the judgement of the Hon'ble High Court in respect of its constitution.
The Pressure Alliance wants that the present chairman should be relieved of his post and the charges taken over by the government till the formation of the regular council by holding election in a free and fair manner. It is ready to extend all possible cooperation to the government to hold election process and the electoral preparation. The Alliance expects positive response from the government. The opinion of legal experts will be taken to draft a memorandum for submission to the Commission and Secretary of the department concerned through the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar.
The alliance has also observed that the present Council has no right to use the fund provided to it by the government because there is apprehension of its misuse by the chairman and the other members on it. Besides there is allegation that no action plan has been prepared in consultation with all the members of the Council. The schemes and projects to be implemented are being done in an arbitrary and whimsical manner. There is also the allegation that many members have not been asked to submit the list of beneficiaries with dubious motive. The Alliance has also observed that the overall functioning and performance of the Development Council is not above board and calls for immediate steps from the state government for its formation according to the rules and regulations.  (Source: SentinelAssam)
