Development Council refutes all the allegations of anomalies and irregularities

Silchar, March 22: Manipuri Development Council decried the demand of a pressure group formed jointly by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, All Assam Manipuri Students' Union, All Assam Manipuri Women Meirapaibi Coordination Committee, All Assam Manipuri Youth Association, Senior Citizens' Forum, Barak Valley Meitei Convention, Thangal Marup and Manipuri Diaspora for the election to the Council now running on ad–hoc basis by the State government of Assam.
Addressing a press meet held here today, Jiten Singh, Chairman of the Council, said that if the existing body of the Council was dissolved now, the election would never take place as the Bill of formation of MDC was neither passed in Parliament nor in Assembly. Singh said that State government on January 27, 2011 agreed to form the Manipuri Development Council for the welfare of the Manipuri community people after 23 years movement of Union Manipuri Association.
Singh also took the opportunity to refute all the allegations of irregularities and anomalies of the fund allotted to MDC for the development of the people. Detailing the expenditures of the Council for 2012–2013, the chairman said that around Rs 11 lakhs were allotted for the GNM training of thirteen people, a total of Rs 23, 40, 000 for the thirteen skill development centre across the state, Rs 10, 000, 00 for the distribution of utensils to the Manipuri community people of around hundredvillages, Rs 35 lakhs for 700 families under individual beneficiary scheme, Rs. 9,96, 500 for the education, sports and culture, Rs. 1 crore 40 lakhs for the sand gravelling of around 350 lanes of different Manipuri villages. It can be recollected here that a Pressure Alliance wanted that the present chairman should be relieved of his post and the charges taken over bythe government till the formation of the regular council by holding election in a free and fair manner. The alliance had also observed that the present Council had no right to use the fund provided to it by the government because there is apprehension of its misuse by the chairman and the other members on it. Besides there was allegation that no action plan had been prepared in consultation with all the members of the Council. The schemes and projects to be implemented were being done in an arbitrary and whimsical manner. There was also the allegation that many members have not been asked to submit the list of beneficiaries with dubious motive. The Alliance had also observed that the overall functioning and performance of the Development Council is not above board and called for immediate steps from the state government for its formation according to the rules and regulations.
Refuting all the allegations of the Alliance, the chairman said that everything was transparent in the Council. If any one had any query he was asked to meet the council members who assured that they would answer all the questions and queries of people.
