Functioning of Manipuri Development Council questioned

SILCHAR, Jan 30: The 2nd foundation day of Manipuri Development Council was observed today with many a question about its functioning and performance in the interest of the communityfor which it was formed. Manipuri Diaspora Assam, apex Manipuri Body, observed the day of in different places of the State with multi–programme. In the districtof Hailakandi, the function to observe the day was held in the Thougal Marup Hall presided over by K Nonibabu Singha, president of the Hailakandi district committee of Manipuri Diaspora. M Surjya Kumar Sharma, advisor Manipuri Diaspora, central committee, L Manglemba Singha, vice– president , Th Benubabu Singha, president Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam graced the occasion as guests. Members from All Assam Manipuri Women Meirapaibi Coordination Committee, All Assam Manipuri Students' Union and Thougal Marup also participated in the foundation day event.
Naoria Angausana while welcoming the invited guests spoke about the history and background of the great event. Dr. M. Santi Kumar Singha, general secretary, Manipuri Diaspora Assam, delivered the key– note address. He said that the Manipuri Development Council was granted for the betterment and welfare of the Manipuri community by the State government of Assam andit was the responsibility of all to see that the Council functioned well, maintaining transparencyand accountability.
Samarjit Singha, on the other hand, expressed his dissatisfaction at the functioning of the Council and pointed out that the funds allocated in the budget of last year were not used properly. Rather,it was a total misuse of funds and that there was no work of significance. Other members too agreed with Samarjit Singha and demanded that the present Council needed to be reorganized for better functioning andbetter results. They alleged there was no planning and proper guidance to run the Council in a well coordinated manner for the socio–economic development of the Manipuris. It was further alleged that a huge fund of Rs 2.5 crore which was shown to have been utilized during the last financial year raised many questions as it was not properly accounted for or audited.
