AIUDF pins blame on corruption for Lakhipur's woes

SILCHAR, Dec 7: The Lakhipur unit of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is gearing up for the upcoming panchayat elections with an eye on the issue of corruption in PDS. Panchayat polls in the state are likely to be held on January next year.
Alhaj Chouba Mia, president of AIUDF's Lakhipur committee, while addressing workersmeeting, raised the issuesof enormous anomalies and irregularities in the job cards in the greater areas of Lakhipur subdivision. "Eradication of corruption in village level will be our main agenda in the upcoming rural polls and we seek the help of all sections of people in this mission."
Chouba Mia alleged though the government adopted the policy to improve the socio-economic condition of thepeople by providing thememployment facilities under the panchayat system, the corruption-ridden administrative machinery stood as stumbling block.
According to him, the benefits did not percolate down the poor and needy in economic distress. He pointed out that in conformity with the guidelines of MGNREGA scheme, the job cards were issued to the house holders of the villages, ensuring them 100 days employment. "But, it was noted for long no jobs were being provided and the cards were left unused. People were deprived of employment as guaranteed under the scheme," he added.
Moreover, he said that many householders did not get job cards, for which no plausible explanation came forward. He demanded proper investigation and punishment to the guilty persons for indulging in willful fraud in the distribution of job cards, flouting the standing guidelines and in flagrant violation of the policy.
The AIUDF had earlier alsosubmitted a memorandum to Joyram Ramesh, Minister of Panchayat and Rural Development, Government of India, regarding the anomalies in job card distribution in the area.
Chouba Mia also brought into focus the innumerable anomalies inthe execution and implementation of development works under panchayat system. "Many schemes remained on papers only. Funds hadnot been utilized in reality but completion reports against works done submitted," he alleged.
Irregularities galore existed in respect of MGNREGA works as well as other schemes and projects in the development blocks of Lakhipur, Binnakandi, Rajabazar and Banskandi which, he stressed, shouldbe investigated by the CBIin order to unfathom the level of malpractices and anomalies before the public.
On the occasion, hundredsof Congress workers led by Altaf Hussain Mazumder officially joined the AIUDF.
Altaf Hussain Mazumder said that he left Congress as it has become a hub of corrupt persons. He said that they would jointly work for the AIUDF to winmaximum seats in the upcoming polls. (SentinelAssam)
