SILCHAR, June 15: As compared to the other parts of the State and after the remarkable results in this year's higher secondary examination, the students of Barak Valley failed to show their excellence in the HSLC examination, the result of which were declared today. There are so many reputed private schools in this town, which always claim to produce good students, but they have failed to make any mark thisyear. This is the first in recent times that Barak Valley did not figure on the toppers' list.
Altogether 15 students from Barak Valley starred on the merit list in 2010 but the result of HSLC was not satisfactory in last year as Saugata Dey of Holy Cross School was the lone name from Barak Valley on the merit list, who secured 14th position. But this time the results are quite disappointing.
The overall performance of educational institutions in Cachar district as a whole was comparatively disheartening than that of the two other districts of thevalley namely Karimganj andHailakandi. In Cachar, 13, 957 students appeared in the HSLC examination, out ofwhich only 7, 637 passed out. Only 927 were in first division, 2,101 were in second division and remaining 4,609 were in third division. The pass percentage was 54.72.
Holycross School, the oldest convent school of this city, did a satisfactory result as out of 100 students, 95 secured first division and five students passed in the second division. 15 students of the school passed with distinction and 35 passed with star marks. A total of 311 letters were earned by the students of the school. Another well-known private school, Silchar Collegiate School, recorded a cent per cent success as all the 123 students passed out with flying colours, out of which 123 secured first division and remaining passed in second division. In South Point School, the percentageof pass is 94.73, as out of 76 students, 72 were successful.54 secured first division and 18 secured second division. The school earned 150 letters, 4 distinctions and 21 stars.
Like in previous years, private institutes in Silchar maintained supremacy on the result sheet while the government schools recorded a miserable performance. The performance of Government Boys School was very poor as not even a single student could earn a first division. Adharchand HS School, another government school in Silchar, in which out of 98 students appeared, 88 passed out but only 17 couldsecure first division.
On being asked about the poor performance by the students in this year's HSLC examination, Nibaran Chandra Das, school inspector of Cachar district, said, "The negligence of teachers and students are the main reasons of the unsatisfactory results by the government schools." He further pointed out that the guardians are not conscious as they do not take the pain to ask for the performance of the students in the schools.
Karimaganj's picture was better than other two districts. 65.34 per cent of total 4,305 students passed the examination out of withonly 601 in 1st division, 1,432 in 2nd and 2,272 in 3rd division. In Hailakandi, the result was better in comparison to last year. Total 4,471 students appeared this year and out of them 2,868 came out successfull. Percentage of pass was 64.15 per cent. 357 figured in the 1st division list, 855 in 2nd and 1656 in 3rd division.
However, the poor results bythe schools of Barak Valley again have raised the controversy on the answer scripts. The students of Barak Valley were supplied 16 pages answer script, while students from Brahmaputra valley were provided with 24 pages scripts. (Sentinelassam)
