‘Manipuri Diaspora’ to hold State convention

SILCHAR, Jan 4: 'Manipuri Diaspora'of Assam, the apex organization ofthe community, at its executive committee meeting held recently here with Justice RK Manisana Singh, former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court in the chair, themembers deliberated on the relevant issues and adopted resolutions unanimously. At the outset, Dr M Santi Kumar Singha, general secretary of the organization, read out the resolutions adopted in its last meeting and presented a brief report on its various activities before the House. He also highlighted the achievements so far.
The 'Manipuri Diaspora', Dr Singha outlined, was formed with the objectives of forming a strong body which consisted of 241 members from state level and social organizations of the community in order to press for aneconomic development council in the uplift of the Manipuris. It reiterated a Rajya Sabha MP seat for the Manipuri speaking people and reservation of an assembly constituency seat. Besides, it insisted for allocating at least three seats in the Legislative Council (Upper House) for Manipuris and to reserve seats for them in all the development boards, cells and council constituted by the Government of Assam. It was at the same time resolved to fight for the protectionof the identity and rights of Manipuri language and culture.
Justice RK Manisana Singh appreciated the members of the 'Diaspora' for their relentless and sustained efforts for the cause of Manipuri community and expressed his hope that they would continue to work cohesively to promote peace and harmony and maintain best of relations with other linguistic and religious groups. It was decided after prolong discussions that a state level convention of 'ManipuriDiaspora' at an early date. It was felt by the members that a permanent accommodation to house the body whose activities have been increasing should be arranged. (SentinelAssam)
