Alto car hijacked, driver murdered

SILCHAR, July 8: Lakhipur subdivision of Cachar bordering Manipur has emerged as a place of crimes which occur frequently, often bringing out bone- chilling incidents. According to police sources in one such gory happening, an Alto car was virtually hijacked by some anti-social elementswho in the guise of passengers hired and brought it all the way from Hailakandi town to a place along Digan hills on NH 53 between Pailapool and Jirighat in the evening of Thursday. The fact came to light with the recovery of the body of its driver Javed Jamal Laskar (21), of Narayanpur part-I under Hailakandi police station by some tribals who were moving early this morning from their hamlet to the jhum cultivation areas.
On seeing the body, the tribals immediately informed Lakhipur policestation and the sub inspector of policeD Bhattacharjee along with his men rushed to the spot, and brought it to the police station and then sent it to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post mortem, the report of which was awaited.
From the possession of the driver, documents in respect of the vehicle and some photographs were recovered which provided relevant information about the deceased and the owner of the vehicle Arif Hussain Barbhuiya of Lakhiband part-II near the town of Hailakandi. After receiving the information from Lakhipur police station, Barbhuiya came there and identified the body asthat of his driver. All that he could say was that his vehicle was hired by some persons and nothing more. He filed an FIR with the Lakhipur police station. The Alto went missing and it isbelieved that it was hijacked by the passengers after murdering the driverin cold blood.
D Bhattacharjee who took over the investigation expressed his hope and confidence that definite clues would be soon available to arrive at the macabre incident and also to find out the vehicle which is believed to have been taken along NH 53 beyond Jiribam in Manipur. In the meantime, SDO civil Leena Das has advised the police for maximum vigilance along the highway which has been known as the transit route linking the infamous golden triangle. (SentinelAssam)
