One murdered brutally

SILCHAR, June 25: Last night around 9 pm, Naresh Kalandi (50), residing in the village of Naidalbasti under Lakhipur police station of Cachar was murdered brutally by some miscreants, police said. Naresh Kalandi, a daily wage earner, belonged to tea tribe community, andwas a pious man and known for his simplicity and generosity. His murder has therefore come as a shock and disbelief in and around the area.
According to police sources, the reason or motive behind his killing seemed to be an old rivalry arising out of the police action by Naresh against the persons who were involved in assaulting his wife a few years ago. The matter is pending in the court and non-bailable arrest warrants were issued against them who are now absconding. Once they did approach Naresh for compromise, but he refused, said the sources. Naresh was taken to a nearby jungle area of his house by one of the persons, believed to be the accused inthe assault case of his wife, on some pretext. The moment he was away in the forested area, the persons absconding subjected him to repeatedblows all around his body, and battered him to death. The body of Naresh was taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post mortem and the report is awaited. The investigation officer G Bhattacharjee of Lakhipur police station, said he wasconfident of arresting the accused, butdeclined to identify them. (SentinelAssam)
