12-hr Assam bandh today

GUWAHATI, June 24: The Krishak MuktiSangram Samiti (KMSS) and Brihattar Guwahati Mati Patta Daabi Samiti have called a 12-hour Assam bandh from 5 am on Saturday in protest against the arrest of KMSS general secretary and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi and killing of three people in police firing at Dispur on June 22. Various district committees of the KMSS have called the bandh demanding unconditional release of the peasant leader who was arrested from Guwahati Press Club on Friday on the issue of Dispur violence. Angry people blocked the NH 37 in Garchuk area of the city after learning about Akhil Gogoi's arrest. Road blockade was also staged by the public in Teok, Laluk, Nambar, Chabua, Jorhat and other parts of the State, including Guwahati. Various political and apolitical parties have criticized the Tarun Gogoi-led Government for the arrest of Akhil Gogoi. The Paresh Baruah faction of the ULFA has also condemned the arrest of the peasant leader. In an e-mailed statement, leader of outfit's central publicity cell Arunodoy Dohotia said, "The arrest of Akhil Gogoi shows the fascist character of the Assam Government."
The AASU, North East Students' Organization (NESO), Asom Unnati Sabha and Asom Sena have also condemned the arrest of the KMSS leader.
In a release to the media, NESO chairman and AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya, NESO secretary general Gumjum Haider, AASU president Sankar Prasad Rai and general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi warned that the arrest of the KMSS secretary cannot stop protests by the people.
Asom Unnati Sabha president Rohini Kumar Gogoi and Asom Sena chief convener Nilofar Rahman too criticized the arrest of Akhil Gogoi.
The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), the Assam State Council of the All India Kisan Sabha, the Biswajit Rai faction of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU), All Assam Gorkha Students' Union, the Barpeta district unit of the All Assam Minorities Students' Union (AAMSU), Asom Yuba Parishad, Asom Chetana Nari Santha, Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), the State BJP, the State Patanjali Yog Samiti, Karbi Anglong Bengali Samaj and other organizations have condemned Gogoi's arrest.
The Guwahati Press Club also criticizedthe arrest of the RTI activist from its campus. (SentinelAssam)
