BJP’s Guwahati meet sets agenda for BV

SILCHAR, Jan 10: The two-day National Executive Council meet of BJP at Guwahati which concluded on Sunday was significant in the context of Assam and Barak Valley in particular with Assembly elections round the corner. Though the message conveyed from both the closed door conclave and public meeting was in the wider canvas of political spectrum, for the saffron stronghold of this valley, it had its own implication.
The leaders and party workers from the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi did get the clear signal it was time to bury the hatchet and put up united face to dethrone the Congress led State Government of Tarun Gogoi embroiled in the cobweb of corruptions, the latest being the expose of huge property owned by the family of Chief Minister in America. The multi-crore scam of North Cachar Hills was at the centre state of debate.
The party leadership of the valley will have to adopt a strategy to beat Congress on the slippery turf and at the same time keep at bay AIUDF. Obviously, corruption will be one of the main issues as the poll plank of BJP. Alone with that massive financial irregularities and anomalies in development funds including the burning issues of deplorable conditions of highways and roads, the delayed BG and E-W Corridor projects will be the ammo to keep its main adversary on backfoot.
The galaxy of leaders at the biggest ever show of the party in the Northeast – Nitin Gadkari, LK Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad – joined by the Chief Ministers of BJP ruled States and the stalwarts of NDA allies were buoyed by the media hype and coverage and the positive public reactions. It provided them the index of people’s mind and mood, disillusioned and disenchanted by the misrule and misgovernance of Gogoi Government who want change. The party leadership has to capitalize on “scams and corruption”.
Along with that the biggest issue of influx of Bangladeshis from across the border, as resolved in the meet, is another weapon for giving a fight to Congress, known for nurturing illegal migrants as vote-bank, which is desperate to cling to power for the third term. The latest revised electoral rolls record abnormal rise in number of voters in the districts of Hailakandi and Karimganj. Congress deliberately enacted IMDT Act to protect Bangladeshis which has threatened the demographic profile of the Northeast States.
The oratory and demagoguery at the meet with all fire and brimstone projected Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a catastrophe for the nation and the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi as a disaster for seeking shelter under the image of “Mr. Clean” and “Mr Efficient” respectively, adding to the woes and miseries of common men for their failure to check sky rocketing prices. The issue of “saffron – terrorism” will be yet another ammo to harangue Congress which it has adopted as a ploy to hide its scams. In the final analysis, the leadership has to be serious in impressing on the minds of people that it is the only party which can give the State a corruption free and development oriented government.
