Violence against Mizo women increasing

SILCHAR, Dec 4: Even as the gang rape of a Mizo BPO employed girl in the national capital has rocked the entire country and created public outrage with questions being asked how safe is New Delhi, though not a new poser, yet another macabre incident of the kind involving a damsel from the hills State has sent shock waves across Barak valley.
According to police sources, this time the culprits behind the heinous crime were the teenagers between 18 and 20 and studying in different colleges. Two of them are the sons of PSOs of the Deputy Commissioner and MLA Dr Rumi Nath.
The sources added that it was on the basis of the personal intervention of the Liaison Officer of Mizoram House here that the victim, her accomplice, and two of the culprits identified as Shubhadeep Dutta and Shankar Dayal Sharma were traced in the top floor of a building at Chamragudam, a commercial hub of the town. They were handed over to the sadar police station in the evening of Thursday last.
From the confessional statements of Dutta and Sharma, it came to light that in ten of them were involved in outraging the modesty of the girl who hailed from Champai in Mizoram. The accomplice of the victim, also a Mizo woman, Mawlsuwami, acted as an agent. In the night-long raid that followed, the police could take into custody in all seven of the ten accused. The others in police dragnet have been identified as Jalil Laskar, Biswajit Rakshit, Biju Nayak, Paplu Das and Vishal Burman. Bishal happens to be the son of a police personnel. Three other accused are absconding, according to sadar police station OC SK Chauhan. But he is confident that they will be nabbed soon. A hunt is on.
The seven accused and Mawlsuami were produced before the CJM court that ordered their remand to police custody. The investigation so far has revealed the seamy side of the murky affair and the degenerating values caused by cyber-mania among youths. Mawlsuami, who lives with a young man in the Sonabarighat near the town, is believed to lure youths and arrange for their entertainment with girls from her State at places convenient to them in lieu of money. It is a part of the thriving flesh trade in and around this town. The victim, after interrogation, has been handed over to the Mizoram Police.
Many intriguing questions have cropped up as to how the victim all the way from Champhai could come here and fall in the trap of Mawlsuami. What is the past record of Mawlsami and her modus operandi? Is she running a racket or part of a racket? There are authentic reports with an NGO working among sex workers that women from Mizoram and even Mynamar are involved in flesh trade.
In the meantime, an influential Mizo Women Organization, Hmeiche Insuihkhawm Pawl, has expressed deep anger and anguish against increasing incidents of rape, molestation and harassment of women in the State and outside. Even the minors are not spared which has brought infamy to the State with highest incidents of child abuse.
According to the Mizoram Police, around 357 rape cases were filed in Mizoram since 2006 till November 17 of this year. There is something rot in this State with the highest rate of literacy which calls for serious introspection by all right thinking people and NGOs. (Sentinelassam)
