‘Congress may face public wrath in 2011’

SILCHAR, Dec 2: Accusing the elected representatives of Barak Valley having unholy nexus with a group of corrupt government officials to loot the money, actually meant for the rural people, Sharif Uz-Zaman Laskar, general secretary of North East Congress Committee today urged upon AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi to keep close vigil on the functioning of the party leaders in the Southern part of Assam. He further apprehended that, the ire of people, originated from the long deprivation, might hamper the prospect of the party in 2011 Assembly election. Laskar, who met Gandhi on Thursday morning in Delhi, said, elected representatives belonging to the ruling party in connivance with the government officials always misused the funds for their own uses depriving the deserving people. As a result, not a single paisa of the Central Government grants reaches the people at the grassroots-level. This had shattered the image of the party to a large extent, and signs of erosion in the party’s support base in Barak Valley had already begun to erupt, Laskar apprehended. Sources said, Laskar had cited the recent episode in Silchar Municipal Board where Susmita Dev, the Chairperson of the Congress ruled Board, was ousted as seven party Ward Commissioners supported BJP’s no-confidence motion against the young lady and subsequently Urban Development Minister of Dinesh Prasad Goala made one of the rebels as the Chairman of the Board. Citing this example, Laskar said, ministers representing Barak Valley in the State Cabinet for more than twenty years had been posing blockade for the promising youths to come to the forefront.
