IIPM joins list of Sharmila's supporters

Rabindranath Tagore Peace Prize on the ‘Iron Lady’
IMPHAL, Sep 11 : Acknow-ledging the unsurpassed struggle of Irom Chanu Sharmila against the infa-mous Armed Forces (Spe- cial Powers) Act 1958, the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) has conferred the Rabin-dranath Tagore Peace Prize on the ‘Iron Lady’.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 51 lakhs, one gold medal, a citation and a shawl.
The prize was handed over to Sharmila at JNIMS security ward today by IIPM founder director MK Choudhury, registrar Ratna Choudhury and dean of administration Tarun Kumar Bose.
The prize was awarded to Sharmila on the occasion of Rabindranath Tagore’s 158th birth anniversary in recognition of her unyielding struggle for human rights.
Hailing Sharmila as a rare human rights crusader , MK Choudhury asserted that Sharmila’s struggle would succeed.
Appreciating the prize, Sharmila said that she viewed the prize as a gesture of identifying with the oppressed people of Manipur. She said that money carried by the award would be used in activities aimed at protecting human rights. (The Sangai Express)
