Highway and roads to get facelift

SILCHAR, Aug 4: The NH 44, much in focus for its worst shape, is undergoing patch works for filling up the potholes and craters and it would have facelift after the monsoon is over. Similarly, Silchar-Kalain and other roads would also be repaired and improved once the rains subside. This would facilitate the movement of vehicular traffic smoothly. This was revealed by an official of the PWD Department at the District-Level Development Committee meeting today held under the presidentship of Harendra Kumar Dev Mahanta, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar.
It was further pointed out by the official that the work on Silchar bypass was stalled due to the problem centering round acquisition of land for which necessary discussion was taken up. The stretch of NH 44 from Kalain to Malidahar on Meghalaya border has been improved and the vehicles can now move faster.
Progress of works in respect of Social Welfare Department and their implementation as well also came up for review. It was decided to extend financial help to helpless women above 45 and others unmarried as well as widows who would be covered under specific schemes. The Deputy Commissioner of Cachar laid emphasis on proper implementation of works as well as their monitoring in order to remove any lacunae or anomaly.
While reviewing the works of Sales Tax Department, it came to light that during the first four months of this financial year, Rs 30.34 crore was collected as sales tax. During the same period of last financial year, the total collection amounted to Rs 27.57 crore. The target for this financial year has been fixed at Rs 109.73 crore. It was further revealed that three business houses were fined Rs 6,000 for not issuing cash memos to the consumers. The Deputy Commissioner sought the cooperation of all the departments for observance of Independence Day in a befitting manner.
