Engineer obeying superior’s order thrashed by MLA

IMPHAL, Aug 2: In an apparent show of might and power, a Superintending Engineer (SE) was assaulted by Wangkhem A/C MLA, K. Meghachandra over the matter of a transformer operating inside his office chamber.
The victim SE is identified to be one Shijagurumayum Joykumar. Reports said that prior to the assault incident some individuals identifying themselves as the workers of the MLA approached the SE over issuance of a transformer. However, the SE as per instructions from the Chief Engineer explained the situation that no transformers or such equipment could be given away without any authorization from the Chief Engineer himself, who reportedly is out of station. Subsequently the workers called the MLA on a cell phone and insisted the SE talk with him, during which the SE gave a similar explanation.
Minutes later, the MLA entered the Directorate of Electricity Department and asked for SE Joykumar. When the engineer identified himself, the MLA slapped and kicked the SE.
Protesting the incident the employees of the department gathered together and apprised the Power Minister at his residence.
The Minister while strongly condemning the incident stated that no Minister or MLA has any authority to carry out such excesses on an official employee of a government. The Minister also arranged a joint meeting for the annoyed employees with the Chief Minister and MLA, Meghachandra.
The employees during the meeting with the chief minister demanded action upon the erring MLA. However, the meeting could not bear any fruitful results. Owing to the outcome of today’s meeting with the Chief Minister the employees disclosed that they would take up different forms of protest. (IMPHALFREEPRESS)
