‘Dissolve autonomous council for fair CBI probe’

SILCHAR, Aug 6: The Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), Dima Hasao district committee, has urged upon the State Government to dissolve the present autonomous district council in order to ensure free and fair investigation by the CBI. In a memorandum signed by Rathindra Thaosen, president, and Suraj Naiding, joint secretary of ASDC district committee based at Haflong, it has been pointed out that several high and low executive officers have been involved in the large scale corruption and misuse of government funds in various State departments.
Naming these officials, the memorandum said that besides corruption, the functioning of the autonomous district council has been reeking with nepotism and favouritism which caused enormous embezzlements of development funds. Citing specific instances of how without executing works, false bills have been prepared and passed for payments in almost all the State departments. The most brazen loot of public fund has been in respect of cashew nut plantation in which the scam has been estimated to be around Rs 12 crore. The memorandum mentions the name of a former Governor and a former Deputy Commissioner involved along with other officials in the siphoning of huge amount.
Considering the magnitude of corruption, the ASDC reinforces its demand for CBI probe into the multi-crore scam covering all the departments and not its confinement to five of them only. This would help in exposing the guilty persons, politicians, bureaucrats and officials, involved in the unprecedented embezzlements of development funds. It has at the same time reiterated that the CBI probe should cover the period from 2001 to 2009.
The case of duping of more than 2,000 people by appointing them against posts under normal sectors created just before the last Council elections without considering the vital question of payment of salaries to them. These people are without salary for the last six months and has urged the Government to consider their cases on humanitarian ground and extend them the benefit of salaries. The ASDC impresses upon the State Government to expedite the peace process with both the factions of DHD in the overall interest of Dima Hasao district. (SENTINELASSAM)
