Major ganja haul near Silchar

SILCHAR, May 5: A team of Assam Rifles (AR) and Assam Police personnel seized 4,228 kg of ganja worth Rs 4.5 crore from two trucks near Rongpur here on Imphal-Silchar Highway this morning.

Acting on specific information, the team of AR and Assam Police laid a trap leading to the seizure of the ganja at around 6.30 am. The ganja was being taken to Guwahati from Imphal.

The security personnel first asked the truck drives to stop and then detected the consignments of 42 quintals of ganja concealed in 290 plastic packets.

The drivers and occupants of the trucks hailed from Imphal. One of them was from Tamenlong. They were taken into custody by the joint team of AR and police.

The detained persons, along with the contraband goods, were handed over to Silchar Sadar police station for further action.

Questions have been raised by knowledgeable circles about free movement of vehicles all the way from Imphal to the outskirts of this town, covering a distance of more than 280 km, passing through a number of check posts.

According to preliminary information, the contraband goods, as usual, were picked up from Manipur-Myanmar border area and the vehicles followed the traditional route identified by the intelligence and security agencies.

It is learnt that drugs and many other intoxicants are supplied by well-organized syndicates or smugglers dealing in such contraband goods from the infamous golden triangle.

According to police sources, thorough interrogation and grilling of the smugglers, now in detention, could lead to vital information on the illegal drugs trade. Sketchy reports said the seized contraband goods were meant to be shipped to other places from Guwahati. (Sentinel assam)
