IMPHAL, Jul 4: Film actress Devita and filmmaker Surja-kanta who were arrested by the police on alleged charge of having nexus with the proscribed KYKL have been re-leased on bail by a Bishnupur court today.
As the charges levelled against the two film persona-lities, who were arrested under Unlawful Activities Preven- tion Amendment Act, 2004, could not be substantiated, Chief Judicial Magistrate of Bishnupur District today gran-ted them bail on signing personal bond of Rs 30,000 each.
Devita and Surjakanta were arrested in connection with an FIR case taken up by the Bishnupur Police in 2007. Section 17 and 20 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Amendment Act, 2004 have been framed against them. Section 17 relates to being a party to extortion activities of an unlawful group or organisation while Section 20 is for being a member of an unlawful group.
Both Devita and Surjakanta were produced before the court of CJM, Bishnupur this afternoon and the prosecutor laid the charges of their arrest in the court. However, as no evidence could be provided to substantiate the charges, the court ordered for granting bail to them. The counsel of Surjakanta had also moved the court stating that his client is a diabetic patient and not in good health.
Devita was arrested along with a self styled captain of KYKL identified as RK Raghunath alias Nongsaba (45) of Ningthoukhong by a combined team of Delhi Police, Bish-nupur Police Commandos and Army from a rented house in South Extension , Delhi on June 26. On June 29, Devita was brought to Imphal and Surjakanta (52) of Nagamapal Pho-ugeishangbam Leikai was picked up by police on June 30.
